Teen Girl Charged in Car Slaying at Movies

S U M M E R V I L L E, S.C., July 9 -- A night at movies turned into a real-life drama when a teenage girl spotted her ex-boyfriend with his new flame.

Police say 18-year-old Rebecca Paige Oswalt drove her car straight into the pair after arguing with them in a movie theater parking lot.

The car struck Meagan Bowen and Curtis Stock, both 17 years old, killing Bowen and seriously injuring Stock.Witnesses reportedly told police that Oswalt and Stock had been quarrelling over a past relationship.

Accused Wept Over Victims

The car was reportedly driving as fast as 45 miles an hour. Witnesses say that after Oswalt ran over the teens, she returned to the scene of the crime, bent down over her victims and wept.

Bowen, a recent high school graduate from Goose Creek, S.C., died Sunday at the scene outside the Movies 8 Oakbrook theater.Stock was listed in critical condition at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Summerville police spokesman, Lt. Craig Legates, said Stock was Oswalt's ex-boyfriend.

"We're still piecing it together, but they obviously had some sort of confrontation in the parking lot," Legates.

Eyewitness Jimmy Burbage, who was smoking a cigarette at the theater's entrance, says he believes the two victims never saw the car coming for them.

"I think they were under the assumption that they were in a safe zone because they were up on the sidewalk," Burbage said.

Burbage said Oswalt's Chevrolet Lumina drove another 200 feet before stopping after hitting the victims. Then Oswalt got out of the car and ran back to where Stock and Bowen were lying on the ground and apologized, Burbage said.

Innocent Victim

Bowen's friends and teachers remembered her as much more than just a good student at her high school.

Her school's drama director, Pam Matthews, said Bowen was a talented actress with a flair for design.

"She was ready to go out and meet the world," Matthews said. "She had done everything she was supposed to do … good attendance, good grades."
